The International Horse Show

by Nancy Heim-berg

The International Horse Show is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 at the CenturyLink Omaha Convention Center and Arena.

In addition to being a world-class equestrian experience - combining top-notch, incredibly intense competition with educational and entertaining activities - the International Horse Show will play host to a number of fun family activities and jumping events.

Show jumping is a fast-moving, exciting and beautiful sporting event that, due to the outstanding effort and strongly beating heart of the horses, both captivates and enraptures a broad audience. This thrilling, competitive sport is all about execution, speed, agility and the athletic spirit of both the horse and its rider. It is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete directly against each other.

The horse-and-rider combos have about 75 seconds to clear at least 13 obstacles of varying heights and widths. The horses are beautiful, strong and physically fit; their riders are also athletic and strong. The rules are very simple to understand and explain to newcomers, so one can easily keep track of the scores - there are no style points, it's all about execution and speed here.

Every competitive show jumping event is different and unique. Each course is designed and built to give horse-and-rider combos different advantages and disadvantages, based on what the course designer requires of them. This makes each new event, with its original course, fun to watch.

The International Horse Show is operated by the Omaha Equestrian Foundation, a certified not-for-profit organization. The foundation's major focus is to create, develop and foster world-class caliber, internationally competitive, equestrian athletes as well as to support the local community. The foundation gave tickets to The International Horse Show in 2012 to the Nebraska Humane Society, Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Club and area military families.

Omaha Performing Arts Presents Disney's THE LION KING

by Nancy Heim-berg

The Orpheum Theater in Omaha presents the cultural and theatrical phenomenon that is Disney’s The Lion King. The sensational Tony Award®-winning Broadway live theater adaptation of the 1994 animated motion picture, also from Disney, began its run at the Orpheum on March 12 and is scheduled to continue through April 7. Visit Ticket Omaha for showtimes and to purchase tickets.

The live theater production of The Lion King is a musical, featuring amazing, unforgettable music from Elton John, with lyrics written by Tim Rice. The legendary Hans Zimmer composed the production's musical score, containing choral arrangements from Grammy Award winner Lebo M. The score pulsates with the mesmerizing rhythms of the Pride Lands of Africa, as well as Rice and John's Oscar-winning song, "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", several other familiar songs from the big screen version and some new original tunes composed specifically for the theatrical production.

Produced by Disney Theatrical, The Lion King's breathtaking visuals involved in bringing African animals to life via costumed actors and actresses and enormous, hollowed out puppets is directed by Julie Taymor.

Enduring Success of Timeless Story

The very first opening night for the live stage musical version of The Lion King was July 8, 1997. It took place at another Orpheum Theatre, this one is in Minneapolis, and by anyone's reckoning was an instant hit. This was even prior to its Oct. 15, 1997, debut at the New Amsterdam Theater on Broadway for previews, with its official premier taking the stage on Nov. 13, 1997.

Moving to the Minskoff Theatre on June 13, 2006, the Broadway production of The Lion King remains a popular attraction after more than 5,350 total performances. According to an article in the April 10, 2012, edition of the Guardian, The Lion King has become the fifth longest-running show in Broadway's storied history. The Guardian goes on to say that its $853.8 million gross makes it the legendary theater district's highest grossing show of all time.

Should I Buy a Home Now?

by Nancy Heim-berg

I'm often asked if this is a good time to buy a home. Some clients are concerned that home prices may fall further than they have already. They are assuming that the best course of action is to wait for the bottom in the market and then buy. The problem with this approach is that you don't know where the bottom is until you see it in the rear view mirror, meaning until you've missed it!

Home prices are one factor in determining your cost of ownership, but so are interest rates and financing availability. Even though interest rates have gone up in the last six months, they are still near historic lows. Since your monthly mortgage payment is a combination of paying down your principal and paying the interest owed, if home prices come down a little further but interest rates up, it could cost you even more to service a mortgage on an identical home!

While a home is a major investment, it is also the center of your personal life. It's important to live in a home that reflects your taste and values, yet is within your financial "comfort zone." To that end, it may be more important to lock in today's relatively low interest rates and low home prices, rather than to hope for a further break in prices in the future.

Please give me a call if I can be of any assistance in determining how much home you can afford in today's market.
