Light Up The Sky This 4th of July!

This weekend starts the celebrations of our nation's birthday! With so many options, it can be hard to decide where to go! Luckily Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska, so there is something for everyone! Here are some of the best spots in Omaha to enjoy great food, music, and entertainment.

The Red, White and Zoo event is family friendly event that takes place every year at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. The event lasts all weekend, starting Saturday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 4 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. Entertainment includes bounce houses, music, and special animal encounters for all ages. Activities are included with admission - regular zoo admission fees apply, free admission for members.

The 65th Annual J.E. George Boulevard Fourth of July Parade starts at 10:00AM on Tuesday at J.E. George Boulevard and Nicholas Street. This Omaha tradition parade takes place every year and draws thousands to start 4th of July. People ride decorated bikes, wagons, homemade floats, and much more through the city in celebration. 

If you're looking for a magnificent firework display we have just the place for you. The College Home Run Derby and the Omaha World-Herald Annual Independence Day fireworks are a tradition for all. TD Ameritrade Park has an amazing display every year after the College Home Run Derby. Over 100,000 people gather to celebrate and enjoy the show. Tickets can be purchased here. Baseball Fans and Runners Unite!

Baseball fans and runners unite! This Sunday, June 25, 2017 the baseball-themed Road to Omaha 5k Run kicks off Championship Finals Week of the 2017 NCAA Men's College World Series! The beautiful scenic run starts at Lewis and Clark Landing with a lap around the renowned TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The run kicks off at 8 AM.

All participants who pre-register receive a custom t-shirt and a Road to Omaha medal at the finish line. The registration fee is $30 for Masters category and $25 for 18 and younger.

Packets can be picked up for pre-registration on Friday June 23 from 10 AM - 3 PM or Saturday, June 24 from 10 AM - 3 OM at the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Plaza (705 Riverfront Drive). You may also register in person during the packet pickup times. If you register online after 5 PM on Wednesday, June 21 you will need to pick up your race number and event shirt on race day, Sunday June 25 between 6 - 7:45 AM.

 

The male and female overall winners for both 18 and under and Masters brackets receive 2 tickets to Game 2 of the College World Series Finals on Tuesday, June 27. All other age group winners receive College World Series swag.

School's Out For The Summer!

School is out and summertime is finally here! The Omaha Children’s Museum offers a variety of summer camps and activities to keep your children busy during their summer break. From Mini Jedi Training and My Princess Dream to Dinosaur Safaris and Silly Sports, there’s a little something for everyone.

Programs run from middle of June through the beginning of August. Space is limited and handled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like your child to participate in all day camp, they can sign up for a morning and an afternoon session and lunch will be provided from 12-1:00PM. Half-day campers need to bring their own lunch.

Week long camps are $120 for members and $135 for nonmembers. Ages start at 2-years-old and are specific to each of the programs. All camps are run by highly trained and experienced museum staff. All campers receive a Summer Camp 2017 T-Shirt!

Wizards, Wands, and Cloaks... Oh My!

Do wizards, wands, Quidditch and vanishing cloaks tickle your fancy? Do you want to take on the magical adventures of Harry Potter? Well come embark on your wizarding wonders at the 2nd Annual Wizarding World Festival and Quidditch Tournament in Thurman, Iowa (just a 45 minute drive from Omaha, NE). 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On Saturday June 10, 2017 from 6:00 - 10:00 PM the festivities commence. Holiday at Hogwarts has teamed up with Moonstone to bring you an amazing games and activities galore. Find out what house you belong to, test your Quidditch playing skills, and cast magical spells at the flick of your wand. 

Costumes are welcome and encouraged! This year's activities include:

13th Annual Wine, Blues, Beer and Hot Air Balloon Festival

The official end of spring and launch of summer is here. Come join Soaring Wings Vineyard & Brewing for a festival of fun. Saturday, June 3, at 3:30 PM, the gates of the 13th Annual Spring Wine, Blues, Beer and Hot Air Balloon Festival open.

There will be live music featuring:

  • 4:00 - 5:00 PM Tim Budig Band (OMA Nom)
  • 5:30 - 6:30 PM Frank Ace Band (Topeka Nom)
  • 7:00 - 8:00 PM Amanda Fish Band (KC Nom)
  • 9:30 - 10:00 PM All Band Jam Session

From 3:30 - 9:30PM the Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q Food Truck will be on site serving some of their favorite featured items. 

Weather permitting, there will be the Hot Air Balloon launch filling the sky with a beautiful display of colors!

Memorial Day Events for Omaha!

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor all those who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.  Omaha has several events planned in honor of Memorial Day:

Memorial Day Services will be held at each of the following locations around Omaha:

Lewis & Clark Landing, Heartland Airborne Memorial and Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorial Day 'Murph Challenge' 2017- Push your mental and physical strength in honor of those who have served by participating in the Murph Challenge!  Run, push ups, pull-ups, squats and more! Are you in fighting shape? Saturday, May 27, 9-4 pm at Climate Cross-fit.

Loessfest 2017- Rivers Edge Park in Council Bluffs- Hop over the state line to celebrate Memorial Day with Music, Food, Hiking, Biking, Fireworks and more!  May 26-29.

Patriotic Quilt Show & Needleworks Exhibit- Stop by the Historic home of Bess Streetor-Aldrich to view these amazing 'Quilts of Valor'!  Through May 29 at 204 E. F Street, Elmwood, NE. All proceeds benefit the GAR Veterans Museum. 

If you prefer to stay with family & friends why not have a BBQ picnic at one of Omaha's incredible parks!

Spring is upon us and the warm weather is overtaking the memories of cold winter months. The flowers are blooming, days are longer, and kids are playing outside in the neighborhoods. Families are getting ready for summer break and vacations to their favorite places.

Starting Saturday May 6 - October 15th, 2017, even shopping for your favorite goods moves outdoors. The Omaha Farmers Market is back again every Saturday and Sunday in the Old Market and Aksarben Village! From 8:30AM - 12:00PM, come and enjoy the best of Omaha's finest produce, herbs, meats, plants, baked goods, jams, jellies, coffee, cheeses, crafts and much more!  

For over 100 years, Omaha Farmers Market has been the place for farmers and growers to come and share their goods with the community. Booths are lined up, showcasing the best of the Omaha agriculture and goods for all to enjoy!

Omaha's Easter EGGstravaganza Weekend

Easter weekend is upon us, and that means family fun for everyone. Kids are getting excited for the surprises the Easter Bunny will bring, parents are ready for family time and good food, and everyone can't wait to see what the Easter eggs have in store for them. The question is, where do you celebrate? 

Lauritzen Gardens is the perfect place to spend the entire Easter Weekend with the family. 

Saturday April 15, 2017 

Families can come and enjoy Easter egg hunts for all ages! But wait... that's not where the Extravaganza stops! You can snap an eggcelent photo with the Easter Bunny and create beautiful crafts with the family. 

The Easter Extravaganza is from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The crafts will be available from 9:00-11:00 AM and Easter egg hunts for ages 2 - 12 years old will be at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 11:30 AM. If your child is below 2 years old there will be a separate area designated for them to enjoy Easter egg hunts as well. The Easter Bunny is on site all morning (bring your camera) ​!

The cafe opens on-site at 9:00 AM and will have coffee, beverages, and breakfast to tide your hunger while you enjoy your time.

Registration is required before the event which can be done here or call (402) 346-4002, ext. 262 by 5:00 PM Wednesday, April 12. Standard garden admission rates apply, members are free. A charge of $3 per child will be required to participate in the crafts and Easter egg hunt.

The fun continues Easter morning with the Garden's Easter Brunch. This annual tradition is a beautiful setting among the Garden's flowers and sells out quickly. The cost is $30 per person, $13 for kids 6-12 and children 5 and younger are free. Reservations are required and along with payment up front. The menu selection is available here.
