Spring is always exciting at the nationally acclaimed Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha. It brings a season of new life, fresh exhibits, and unique experiences that make the zoo worth multiple visits in the coming months. I recently had the privilege of touring several behind-the-scenes areas with the zoo's conservation team. I was among the first to see what visitors can expect this spring.

Spring is bringing new life to Omaha and the zoo. The most heart-warming attraction this spring is the zoo's nursery, where several newborns are making their first appearances.

Kala, a six-week-old snow leopard cub, was born as part of the zoo's participation in the Species Survival Plan and is the show's star. "Kala represents an essential addition to the snow leopard population," explains Dr. Jennifer Michaels, the zoo's lead reproductive specialist. "With fewer than 4,000 snow leopards remaining in the wild, every successful birth in captivity helps us better understand these elusive cats and contributes to genetic diversity."

Visitors can view Kala and her mother through the nursery's viewing window during regular feeding times (10 AM and 2 PM daily). Zoologists are on hand to answer questions and provide insights into snow leopard conservation.

Other notable nursery residents include:
Three African painted dog puppies, born in February to first-time mother Imara
A Bornean orangutan infant named Indah, who can be seen clinging to her mother in the newly renovated Hubbard Orangutan Forest
Twin emperor tamarin monkeys, recognizable by their impressively long white mustaches despite being only the size of a human thumb

Perhaps the most ambitious addition to the zoo this year is the newly completed Grasslands Expedition, a five-year-in-development, 15-acre immersive recreation of the African savanna. Opening officially on April 15, this expansive habitat represents a $31 million investment and a fundamental shift in how the zoo approaches animal habitats.

"We've moved away from the old model of separating species into isolated exhibits," says Chief Operations Officer Michael Thompson. "The Grasslands Expedition brings together multiple species in a landscape that mimics their natural environment, creating more dynamic and enriching spaces for both animals and visitors."

The Grasslands Expedition is new and boasts some excellent new features like the 360-degree panoramic viewing platform that puts visitors at eye level with giraffes; the mixed-species habitat housing zebras, ostriches, and antelope in a single expansive space; Underground viewing areas where visitors can watch elephants cool off in a 65,000-gallon pool; State-of-the-art climate control systems that allow year-round operation despite Nebraska's seasonal extremes, and more.

The most innovative aspect of the Grasslands Expedition is the rotating habitat system, which allows different species to access various parts of the exhibit throughout the day, stimulating natural behaviors and providing constant enrichment.

The reef tank expansion is complete. After two years of careful cultivation, the zoo's expanded Indo-Pacific Reef Tank is now home to one of the most diverse collections of coral in any U.S. Zoo. The 75,000-gallon tank has been redesigned with cutting-edge filtration systems and specialized LED lighting that mimics the exact spectrum of sunlight at various ocean depths.

"What makes our reef system special is that approximately 40% of our coral was aquacultured right here at the zoo," explains marine biologist Dr. Sarah Chen. "Many of these specimens were grown from fragments the size of a quarter and have now developed into stunning colonies."

The newly expanded reef hosts over 500 fish representing 93 species, including several rarely seen in captivity. Don't miss the recently added blue-ringed octopus display, featuring one of the ocean's most beautiful yet deadly creatures in a special secure exhibit with interpretive information about marine toxicology.

For children, the new "Touch the Reef" tide pool allows supervised interaction with hardy invertebrates like sea stars, anemones, and horseshoe crabs, all accompanied by educators who explain the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems.

This spring, the zoo offers unprecedented access to its conservation efforts through a new series of special tours called "Conservation in Action." These limited-capacity experiences (reservation required) take visitors into customarily restricted areas to see how the zoo contributes to global wildlife preservation.

I participated in the Amphibian Conservation tour, where dedicated specialists are working to save critically endangered Panamanian golden frogs from extinction due to a devastating fungal disease. In a laboratory setting that resembles a high-tech clean room more than a traditional zoo exhibit, these tiny yellow amphibians are being bred as an assurance population that could someday repopulate their native forests.

"Many people don't realize that some of our most important conservation work happens entirely behind the scenes," says head amphibian keeper Thomas Rodriguez. "These frogs require particular conditions - from the mineral content of their water to the beneficial bacteria in their environment. What we're learning here applies to these frogs and amphibian conservation worldwide."

This Spring, the zoo offers scheduled behind-the-scenes tours:
Veterinary Hospital Tour (Thursdays, 11 AM)
Insect Propagation Laboratory (Tuesdays, 1 PM)
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center (Mondays and Fridays, 10 AM)
Plant Cultivation Greenhouse (Wednesdays, 2 PM)

If you'd like to participate in a tour, each tour costs $30 in addition to regular admission, and the proceeds directly support the zoo's conservation initiatives. Zoo members receive a 20% discount.

Spring brings a new calendar of special events at the zoo:
Earth Day Celebration (April 22) - Featuring recyclable art competitions, conservation presentations, and special keeper talks focused on endangered species. Solar-powered shuttle buses will provide free transportation from downtown Omaha.
Bloom & Butterflies Festival (May 3-4) - The botanical gardens will showcase thousands of spring flowers alongside the seasonal opening of the butterfly pavilion, where visitors can walk among more than 20 species of free-flying butterflies.
World Penguin Weekend (May 17-18) - The newly expanded Penguin Shore exhibit will be the center of attention with special feedings, research demonstrations, and the debut of the zoo's first-ever 4D documentary "Life on the Ice," produced in collaboration with National Geographic.
Twilight at the Zoo (Thursday evenings, May through September) - The zoo will remain open until 9 PM on Thursdays, offering adults-only evening access with specialty food vendors, craft cocktails, live music, and talks from researchers in a more relaxed setting.

Conservation Impact: Your Visit Makes a Difference
It's worth noting that every visit to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo directly supports local and global conservation efforts. The zoo participates in 49 different Species Survival Plans and funds field research on four continents.

"We're particularly proud of our work with Nebraska native species," says Conservation Director Dr. Emily Sutton. "Many visitors don't realize that we're actively involved in restoring prairie butterfly populations, breeding endangered freshwater mussels for release into local watersheds, and monitoring the health of bat colonies throughout the state."

Your visit to the zoo makes a big difference for conservation efforts. Did you know that a portion of the proceeds from your admission ticket and / or zoo membership helps finance conservation efforts, making your family's fun day at the zoo an investment in wildlife preservation.

Plan Your Visit
Spring Hours (April-May): 9 AM to 5 PM daily, with extended hours until 9 PM on Thursdays beginning in May.
Admission: Adults $24.95, Children (3-11) $16.95, Seniors $21.95, and children under 3 free. Family membership options begin at $119 and include unlimited visits for one year.

Nancy Heim - Berg Team's Pro Tips:
To see the most active animals, plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon
The new Grasslands Expedition is best experienced in the morning hours when animals are most active
The zoo launched a new mobile app, complete with real-time updates on animal feedings and presentations
If you want to avoid crowds, especially at the new exhibits, then consider a weekday visit to
Save time by purchasing tickets online.

With over 17,000 animals representing 962 species, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium continues to rank among the world's leading zoological institutions. This spring's new arrivals, expanded exhibits, and special events make it an ideal time to experience the wonder of wildlife conservation.

Shamrockin' in Omaha!

by Nancy Heim-berg

Hey Omaha! ☘️ Can you believe it's St. Patrick's Day already? Our beautiful city is buzzing with Irish spirit, community celebrations, and plenty of that famous green beer! Whether you've got Irish heritage, are married to it, or love any excuse to wear green, I've covered you with all the Omaha fun around town today. If you’re ready to go green today, check out everything Omaha offers for St. Parick’s Day.

The 2025 AOH St. Patrick's Day Parade
Have you made plans to catch the parade yet? The Ancient Order of Hibernians' annual celebration starts at 10:00 AM downtown. Starting at 15th and Harney, the parade winds through our charming Old Market before finishing up at 10th and Howard. You'll see over 100 floats, fantastic local bands, and many community groups showing their Irish pride.

Insider tip from a local who's been caught unprepared: Try arriving by 9:00 AM to snag a good viewing spot, and don't forget to layer up—you know how fickle our Nebraska March weather can be!

Omaha also has some fun family events planned. Got kiddos? After the parade, why not head over to Heartland of America Park? From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, they're hosting the city's biggest family-friendly St. Paddy's celebration with something for everyone:

You can watch the incredible dancers from Dowds Irish Dance Academy (trust me, the kids are AMAZING!). While there, tap your feet to traditional Irish tunes from talented local Celtic bands. The little ones will love getting their faces painted with shamrocks and rainbows. When hunger strikes, grab a bite from food trucks serving everything from authentic Irish cuisine to local favorites. Don't miss the "Pot of Gold" scavenger hunt!

Are you looking to raise a glass with friends? Omaha's Irish Pubs will surely be Shamrockin'. Check out some of these favorite Old Market Spots: Dubliner Pub has live music all Day (the fiddle player who comes in around 5 PM is incredible!), hearty Irish stew. Some of the best black and tan specials in town and the Lucky's bar crawl that starts at 4:00. Barry O's offers fantastic whiskey flights right down the street, perfect for today's celebration. If you're feeling brave, their corned beef eating contest at 3:00 PM is always hilarious. Don't overlook Annie's Irish Pub, the new kid on the block making quite the impression with Irish coffee that'll warm you to your toes and some creative twists on traditional dishes.

If the downtown scene isn’t for you, and you're in West Omaha, Brazen Head Irish Pub is a family-owned gem that serves the kind of Irish comfort food that feels like a hug on a plate, like their famous potato pancakes. Their Guinness pour is absolute perfection. Over in Benson, Paddy McGown's offers a livelier vibe with a celebration that's always a blast, featuring Irish rock bands scheduled throughout the Day and stacked corned beef as high as the ceiling! I've already heard they've got some special surprises planned for this year!

Contrary to some people's opinion, today is about more than green beer. If you’re not a not a big drinker, Omaha offers alot of ways to celebrate Irish culture without setting foot in a pub. Have you checked out the Durham Museum lately? Their special one-day exhibit on Irish immigration to Nebraska is fascinating, with artifacts and stories that'll transport you back to the 1800s. Movie buffs will love the Irish film marathon at Film Streams in the Dundee Theater, running from noon until midnight. (Their popcorn is worth the trip alone!) The Omaha Celtic Cultural Center is also opening for music workshops, language lessons, heritage displays that the whole family can enjoy, and the awesome Irish Community Mural painted on the brick at Donahue’s Pub.

We care! So, no matter what you do GET HOME SAFELY! With all the celebrating, let's ensure everyone gets home safely. If you're grabbing a ride, Uber and Lyft offer $5 off rides in Omaha today with the code "STPATS2025". Need a designated driver? Our friends at Safe Home Omaha are running free rides from participating bars between 4:00 PM and 2:00 AM. If you prefer public transit, Metro Transit has extended hours on major routes today, with the last buses leaving downtown at 2:30 AM.

Did you know that Nebraska has deep Irish roots? While you're celebrating today, please take a moment to appreciate how Irish immigrants helped build our state during the railroad expansion of the 1860s. Many found work on the Union Pacific Railroad, establishing communities throughout eastern Nebraska with churches, schools, and cultural organizations that still shape our city's character. The first St. Patrick's Day parade in Omaha was in 1878—can you believe we're continuing an almost 150-year-old tradition?

We can help you find your Pot O'Gold with Omaha real estate. Speaking of Omaha's rich history and vibrant neighborhoods, have you considered putting down roots in our fantastic city? Or you want to sell your home and find a new spot to create memories.

The ice was hot, and the competition fierce yesterday as Omaha's bravest and finest faced off in the annual Guns N' Hoses Hockey Challenge. This year's event marked a historic turning point. This year was the 1st time The Omaha Fire Department won this game for the first time since fundraiser began, finally ending the Police Department's long-standing winning streak. "The rivalry is always intense, but it's all in good fun and for an incredible cause," said Captain Mike Reynolds of OFD. "We've been waiting for this win for years, and it feels amazing to bring home the trophy finally."

The rivalry was reignited in Sunday's showdown at the arena, as both departments brought their A-game in what has become one of Omaha's most anticipated charity events. Players traded their uniforms for hockey gear, but departmental pride remained displayed as they battled for year-long bragging rights.

Today we wanted to recognize an honorable tradition of service and sport. The Guns N' Hoses Hockey Challenge began in the early 2010s as a friendly match between a few hockey enthusiasts from both departments. Over the years, the event has grown substantially, moving from small community rinks to larger venues as public interest increased.  Many people don't know about the game's humble beginnings as an informal game between 1st responders who love playing hockey and how organizers recognized this game's potential to support first responder causes. The friendly game evolved into a formal charity event and fierce rivalry that’s intensified with each passing year, as the police department established an impressive winning streak that, ended yesterday with a firefighter win.

Most importantly and impressively, the first responders have raised over $500,000, because of this game. It's become a tradition that supporters look forward to each year and showcases the community spirit of our first responders while providing crucial support to their families.

Now, the cherished Omaha event has become more than just a game. While the competition on the ice was fierce, the true winner was the First Responders Foundation, which benefits from this annual fundraiser. "It's our biggest fundraiser of the year, so we can keep supporting the first responders, veterans, and families in the area," said Todd Sears, president of the First Responders Foundation. Local emergency service personnel and their families benefit directly from the various programs and assistance initiatives these funds support.

The police department had maintained an undefeated record since the event's inception, making Sunday's upset victory even sweeter for the firefighters. After years of coming close, the fire department finally claimed the title with a nail-biting finish that had the crowd on their feet. While breaking the streak.
"We'll hear about this until next year's game," joked Sergeant James Wilson of OPD. "But that's what makes this rivalry special. We'll be back next year ready to start a new winning streak."

The community support for this game is impressive, as crowds packed the stands. First responder families, supporters, and colleagues created an exciting atmosphere. Kids waved signs as they cheered for their favorite departments, and the noise reached "Blues" levels during the final minutes.

After the game, attendees told media outlets about how the event showcases the best of Omaha's community spirit, bringing together different departments that work side by side during emergencies to celebrate their service.

After this year's upset, the table for next year's rematch is already set. The police department will seek to reclaim their title, while the firefighters hope to start a winning streak.

I'm excited that the event keeps growing, getting bigger and bigger every year. It's so much fun. Todd Sears added. "We're grateful to everyone who came out to support these incredible first responders and the work they do every day for our community.

As the players shook hands at center ice after the game, it was clear that while the rivalry remains intense, the respect between Omaha's first responders runs deep—a fitting reminder of the teamwork that keeps our community safe year-round.

Staying Safe and Cool in Omaha During a Heat Wave

by Nancy Heim-berg

As the summer sun intensifies and the mercury rises, Omaha residents are facing the challenge of staying safe and cool during a heat wave. With temperatures soaring, it's crucial to be prepared and know how to protect yourself and your loved ones from the risks of extreme heat.

Hydration and Nutrition

Staying hydrated is key. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol, or high amounts of sugar as these can lead to dehydration. Eating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables can also help maintain your fluid balance.

Limiting Outdoor Activities

Limit outdoor activities, especially during the peak heat hours of the day, to prevent heat-related illnesses. If you must be outside, wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Remember, the sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so plan your day accordingly.

Cooling Your Living Space

Keep your living space cool. Use fans, close blinds to block direct sunlight, and consider spending time in public buildings with air conditioning if your home doesn't have it.

Recognizing Heat-Related Illnesses

Recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms can include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale and clammy skin, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. If you or someone else is experiencing these symptoms, move to a cooler location, rest, and seek medical attention if conditions do not improve.

Vulnerable Populations

The elderly, young children, and those with health issues are more vulnerable to the heat. Check on neighbors and loved ones who may need extra assistance during these times.

Places to Stay Cool in Omaha

For those looking to find a respite from the heat, Omaha offers several options:

- Public Pools and Water Parks: Omaha has a variety of public pools and water parks that are perfect for cooling off. From the fun slides at Fun-Plex Waterpark & Rides to the leisurely pools at Zorinsky Aquatic Center, there's something for everyone.

- Museums and Libraries: Cultural institutions like The Durham Museum and the Omaha Public Library offer air-conditioned spaces along with engaging activities for all ages.

- Shopping Centers: Places like Westroads Mall and Village Pointe Shopping Center provide a cool environment to escape the heat, with the added benefit of shopping and dining options.

- Indoor Entertainment Venues: Enjoy a movie at one of Omaha's theaters or explore the underwater world at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's Scott Aquarium.

- Hotels with Amenities: For those seeking a staycation, hotels such as the Hilton Garden Inn Omaha Downtown/Old Market Area and Hilton Omaha offer amenities like indoor pools and air-conditioned rooms to help you stay cool during your visit.

By following these guidelines and staying informed about the weather forecast, you can navigate the heat wave safely. For more detailed information and tips, visit the resources provided by The Weather Channel and the Red Cross.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe, Omaha. Remember, we're all in this together, and a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring we all get through the heat safely and comfortably.
