We know moving can be stressful. However, it can prove to be especially stressful when you find yourself in a situation where you have to store your items in a self-storage facility. It may seem like one more thing to add to your seemingly never-ending to-do list. Whether you are looking to rent a self-storage facility to hold your belongings for a few weeks or a few months, there are a couple key items that you want to be sure to check off your list to ensure the safety of your items. And yes, as you may have guessed, that is where our blog is going to take us today! 

-The first thing you want to look at when it comes to self-storage is the safety of the facility itself. Does it have security gates around the property, surveillance cameras and/or a keypad code entry? You also want to be sure to use a heavy-duty lock on your particular unit to add an extra layer of protection for your items. 

-The next item to look at is the location of the facility. If there is an item you need to grab last minute, chances are you do not want to make a long commute to retrieve it. So ensuring that the facility is easy to get to is a big deal and a high priority for many people. 

-You always want to be sure to see if the units are climate-controlled or not. This is especially true if you have electronic items as they can be very sensitive to hot and cold weather. And while climate-controlled units tend to be more expensive, it may be worth the money to ensure that your belongings are well kept while they are not with you. 

-The next item you want to look into are the office hours. Are you only able to access your unit when the office is open? And if so, what are those hours and do they work with your schedule? 

-Lastly, you want to always make sure you look at reviews from other individuals who have rented units at that location. If the facility has an extremely poor rating with many bad reviews, it may be a good idea to stay clear of that one and find one that is more reliable and trustworthy. 

*On a side note, it is also important to compare pricing from different storage facilities. It may not behoove you to jump on the first one you see, as that one may end up being terribly overpriced in relation to other comparable facilities in the area.

While Omaha is known as being the largest and friendliest city in Nebraska, there is also a lot of culture, history and beautiful nature all around for residents and guests of the area alike to enjoy! Did you know that some of the most interesting and charming attractions around Omaha are located just a hop, skip and a jump away? In other words – they are a short distance from the center of Omaha, just a day’s drive in fact! That means you are able to explore all the beauty and attraction of the area, and still make it home for dinner! If you are interested in what attractions we are referring to, please keep reading below.

The first day trip we are going to be discussing is Willow Lake, which is located in the northeastern end of Omaha - about an hour’s drive from the city center. Covering over 700 acres, this beautiful lake and recreational area offers a range of wildlife and recreational activities such as hiking, fishing and boating. The perfect destination for a family day outdoors! Our next trip for you to check out is Ponca State Park. Located just two hours from Omaha, it is one of Nebraska’s most visited parks and we sure understand why! Visitors enjoy the breathtaking views of the stunning high hills and Missouri River bluffs that are located aside the Missouri National Recreational River. And if you enjoy bird-watching, you are in luck as Ponca State Park is an ideal location for this in the spring time!

Next, Lauritzen Gardens (also known as the Omaha Botanical Gardens) is located just a short distance from Omaha, and is the perfect place to relax while taking in the breathtaking natural beauty all around you. Rediscover your love and appreciation for nature in the 100 acre garden, or take in one of the many other attractions such as a spring flowering walk, an education center, a bird sanctuary or the parking garden. Whatever you choose to dive into at Lauritzen Gardens, this destination is sure to not disappoint! Our last day trip recommendation is for all of our history junkies out there! Freedom Park Navy Museum is a great destination located at the Greater Omaha Marina, on the banks of the Missouri river. At this outdoor museum you will find some interesting items including rocket launchers and jets, as well as historical military aircraft and artillery. And for all those asking, yes, you can expect to find the USS Submarine and the WWII Minesweeper USS Hazard here as the two main exhibits.

Moving houses signifies a new chapter in your life. The end of memories in one address and the promise of newer and more beautiful ones in your new abode. And while this is a very exciting time, there is also the inevitable stress that accompanies the process – the main stressor being the moving process. If you found yourself nodding in agreeance to the previous sentence, this blog post is for you! We have put together a list of tips and tricks below to help make your move a little more stress-free, hopefully allowing you to enjoy the process and focus on the excitement of the new chapter ahead. Let’s dive right in!

The first tip we have for you is to start early. You may think that packing up your home may only take a day because, well, it’s just throwing items in boxes, right? Wrong. Even the most skilled and experienced packers find that the process always takes longer than they think. So we suggest you start packing up your home about two to three weeks prior to moving day. This will allow you to sort through your items in a thoughtful way by donating things that no longer serve you and throw away items that cannot be reused by someone else, ensuring that you are not hauling unnecessary items to your new home. We also recommend starting with packing items that you use least, such as books, china and holiday decorations. 

Our next tip is to have a system to help you stay organized. You want to be sure to mark (with a star or some sort of symbol of your choosing) the boxes that have the items you know you will need first, such as clothing, kitchen items, toiletries and towels. On that same note, if you are looking to save a little bit of money, try finding used moving boxes as opposed to purchasing new ones. Next, it is important to understand that just because the box is large, that does not mean that you have to fill it with a bunch of heavy items. Try using the larger boxes for lighter items to ensure that the box does not weigh a hundred pounds or break during the moving process, as that can be a huge burden and slow everything down.

When it comes to clothing, may people think you have to take the items off the hangers, fold the clothing, pack the clothing and pack the hangers separately. Not only does this take a lot of time initially, it also creates more work for you at your new home to hang everything back up. Instead, keep everything on the hangers, cover with a large trash bag, and put them in the back of your car for transport. It will save a lot of time – which is a hot commodity when moving! Our last piece of advice is to have a plan for moving day. Make sure that you have all your boxes labeled on both sides so you can always see what is contained in each, and have it all organized for the movers when they arrive. This will help to ensure a stress-free and more enjoyable moving day for everyone involved!

Since January is National Radon Action Month, we wanted to dedicate an entire blog post to this topic. Our hope is to educate you on ways to keep you and your loved ones safe from this serious health risk that, sadly, is responsible for more than 20,000 American deaths each year. What is radon you ask? Well that is a great place to start! Radon, which seeps up from the ground and dissolves into the air, is an odorless, tasteless and invisible gas that can prove to be very harmful when exposed to large quantities. As one of the leading causes of lung cancer deaths in America amongst nonsmokers, it is important to be educated on the ways to detect radon and fully understand the steps you can take to ensure the safety of your home from this harmful substance. We have listed a few actions for you to take below, and hope you take a few minutes to review this crucial information. 

-The first (and most obvious) action you can take is to test your home. The U.S. Surgeon General, as well as the EPA, have advised that all homes in the United State be tested for radon, and luckily the testing is relatively simple and reasonably priced. Here is a link to obtain your test kit and learn more about the testing process in your home. 

-Second, if you are in the market to purchase a home, make sure you are buying a radon-resistant home by finding builders who use radon-resistant new construction. 

-Third, stay up to date on local radon events happening around your community. Especially in the month of January when the topic is at the forefront of many discussions, it will be much easier to find events to attend in the coming weeks/days. 

-The forth step is to spread the word! As we stated above, we can’t smell, see or taste radon, which presents a large challenge because a normal person cannot detect the substance without testing for it. Spread the message to your family, friends and neighbors and let them know not only about the harmful effects of radon, but also the steps in which they can protect themselves and their loved ones.

​Our beautiful city of Omaha has long been revered as being a step ahead when it comes to unique food concepts, and has been celebrated for its mouthwatering dishes, modern restaurant scene and innovative cuisine. Our first must-visit restaurant is a popular destination for many locals in Omaha and one that will make meat lovers rejoice! Yes, you may have guessed it – we are talking about The Drover. This admired steakhouse is famous for its whiskey steak, ribeye’s, filets and sirloins, and also serves dishes such as pork chops, crab legs, fish and chicken. And for those looking to balance their plates with a little green, The Drover also has a large salad bar to dive into. Next, located in the Old Market District is M’s Pub, which is well-known for their salads, steaks, soups, cold and hot sandwiches, and delicious desserts. They also have an impressive wine list, and visitors can take their pick from lounging on the patio, island bar or beautiful main dining room.

Our next destination is located in the Midtown Crossings District and is a popular restaurant with contemporary flair. Wondering what’s on the menu at The Grey Plume? Well, that depends on what’s in season! Visitors will be impressed with this farm-to-table concept and can expect dishes to be made with locally sourced and grown ingredients. This concept allows the chefs to be creative and let their talents soar. The Grey Plume is also a Green Restaurant Certified by SustainaBuild, and a location for cooking classes for locals looking to hone their skills. Lastly – calling all vegans! Modern Love is a new vegan restaurant in town and goes against the popular ‘meat capitol’ reputation that Omaha has come to be known for. Modern love is only open for dinner, and goers can expect to see dishes such as mushroom cheeseburgers, enchiladas and gnocchi. Who says vegan eating can’t be delicious!
