The 37th Annual John C. Fremont Days

by Nancy Heim-berg

Hey there, Omaha families! Are you looking for the perfect weekend getaway that won't break the bank or require hours of driving? Well, how about a family adventure, just 30 Minutes from Omaha!

Just a short hop down Highway 30, the charming city of Fremont is rolling out the red carpet for its spectacular 37th Annual John C. Fremont Days festival from July 11th through July 13th and trust us when we say this is one celebration you won't want to miss.

As the Nancy Heim-Berg Team, we've been calling the greater Omaha area home for decades, and we can honestly say that John C. Fremont Days has become one of our absolute favorite summer traditions. There's something magical about this award-winning festival that keeps families coming back year after year – and once you experience it for yourself, you'll understand why it's been going strong since 1987.

Picture this: you're strolling through downtown Fremont with your kids, the smell of funnel cakes and grilled corn filling the air while live music drifts from the main stage. The little ones are tugging at your sleeves, trying to decide between the face painting booth and the bounce house while you're secretly eyeing that craft beer tent. This is precisely the kind of wholesome, small-town fun that makes living in Nebraska so special.

The festival truly lives up to its promise of having something for everyone. Who doesn't love a parade? Watching your children's faces light up as the marching bands and colorful floats go by, with candy flying, makes the parade worth the trip. Speaking of lighting up, the Balloon Glow event is breathtaking every time we see it. Imagine dozens of hot air balloons illuminating the evening sky like giant, glowing lanterns. At the same time, families spread out blankets on the grass, share popcorn, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

If you've got little cowboys and cowgirls in your crew, they'll be thrilled to know there's a real rodeo as part of the festivities. It's authentic Nebraska at its finest, as professional riders and ropers showcase their skills. At the same time, your kids cheering from the stands is an experience that captures the true spirit of our great state. The kids' activities are endless, too – from carnival games to educational booths where they can learn about local history and agriculture.

What we love most about John C. Fremont Days is how it brings the entire community together. Local businesses open their doors, volunteers from all walks of life contribute to making everything run smoothly, and families from across eastern Nebraska come together to celebrate. It's the kind of event that reminds you why small-town values and community spirit are so important, even as we enjoy all the benefits of living near a vibrant city like Omaha.

The festival runs throughout downtown Fremont, allowing you to easily walk from event to event, grab a bite here, watch a performance there, and let the kids run off their energy in between. The organizers have done an incredible job over the past 37 years of creating a layout that's both exciting and manageable for families with children of all ages.

From our perspective as longtime residents of the Omaha area and real estate professionals, we've seen firsthand how events like John C. Fremont Days showcase the incredible quality of life we enjoy here in eastern Nebraska. Whether you're already part of our community or considering making the move to the Omaha area, festivals like this demonstrate the rich cultural fabric and strong sense of community that make our region such a wonderful place to call home.

The beauty of living in Omaha is that we get the best of both worlds – all the amenities and opportunities of a thriving metropolitan area plus easy access to charming communities like Fremont, where traditions run deep. Neighbors still know each other's names. It's this perfect balance that makes the Omaha area such an attractive place for families looking to put down roots.

At the Heim-Berg Team, we've helped countless families find their dream homes throughout the Omaha metro area, so we understand that choosing where to live is about so much more than square footage and school districts. It's about finding a place where your family can thrive, where there are opportunities for fun and growth, and where you can build lasting memories. In Omaha, annual events like John C. Fremont Days are exemplary of the enriching experiences that await families who choose to make eastern Nebraska their home.

So, this weekend, grab the kids and head out to Fremont for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration. You'll get to experience genuine Nebraska hospitality, enjoy some fantastic food, and create memories that will have your family talking for years to come. Plus, you might fall in love with another one of our wonderful local communities.

Whether you're a longtime Omaha resident looking for a fun family outing or someone considering a move to our area, The Nancy Heim-Berg Team is always here to help you navigate everything our region has to offer. The ice was hot, and the competition fierce yesterday as Omaha's bravest and finest faced off in the annual Guns N' Hoses Hockey Challenge. This year's event marked a historic turning point. This year was the 1st time The Omaha Fire Department won this game for the first time since fundraiser began, finally ending the Police Department's long-standing winning streak. "The rivalry is always intense, but it's all in good fun and for an incredible cause," said Captain Mike Reynolds of OFD. "We've been waiting for this win for years, and it feels amazing to bring home the trophy finally."

The rivalry was reignited in Sunday's showdown at the arena, as both departments brought their A-game in what has become one of Omaha's most anticipated charity events. Players traded their uniforms for hockey gear, but departmental pride remained displayed as they battled for year-long bragging rights.

Today we wanted to recognize an honorable tradition of service and sport. The Guns N' Hoses Hockey Challenge began in the early 2010s as a friendly match between a few hockey enthusiasts from both departments. Over the years, the event has grown substantially, moving from small community rinks to larger venues as public interest increased.  Many people don't know about the game's humble beginnings as an informal game between 1st responders who love playing hockey and how organizers recognized this game's potential to support first responder causes. The friendly game evolved into a formal charity event and fierce rivalry that’s intensified with each passing year, as the police department established an impressive winning streak that, ended yesterday with a firefighter win.

Most importantly and impressively, the first responders have raised over $500,000, because of this game. It's become a tradition that supporters look forward to each year and showcases the community spirit of our first responders while providing crucial support to their families.

Now, the cherished Omaha event has become more than just a game. While the competition on the ice was fierce, the true winner was the First Responders Foundation, which benefits from this annual fundraiser. "It's our biggest fundraiser of the year, so we can keep supporting the first responders, veterans, and families in the area," said Todd Sears, president of the First Responders Foundation. Local emergency service personnel and their families benefit directly from the various programs and assistance initiatives these funds support.

The police department had maintained an undefeated record since the event's inception, making Sunday's upset victory even sweeter for the firefighters. After years of coming close, the fire department finally claimed the title with a nail-biting finish that had the crowd on their feet. While breaking the streak.
"We'll hear about this until next year's game," joked Sergeant James Wilson of OPD. "But that's what makes this rivalry special. We'll be back next year ready to start a new winning streak."

The community support for this game is impressive, as crowds packed the stands. First responder families, supporters, and colleagues created an exciting atmosphere. Kids waved signs as they cheered for their favorite departments, and the noise reached "Blues" levels during the final minutes.

After the game, attendees told media outlets about how the event showcases the best of Omaha's community spirit, bringing together different departments that work side by side during emergencies to celebrate their service.

After this year's upset, the table for next year's rematch is already set. The police department will seek to reclaim their title, while the firefighters hope to start a winning streak.

I'm excited that the event keeps growing, getting bigger and bigger every year. It's so much fun. Todd Sears added. "We're grateful to everyone who came out to support these incredible first responders and the work they do every day for our community.

As the players shook hands at center ice after the game, it was clear that while the rivalry remains intense, the respect between Omaha's first responders runs deep—a fitting reminder of the teamwork that keeps our community safe year-round.
